There’s something I wish more people understood about parents who have lost a child. We don’t just experience a loss. We experience a change in how we see the world. Things that once seemed so important suddenly don’t matter nearly as much. The little arguments. The unnecessary drama. The expectations of others. The constant pressure to keep everyone happy. After you’ve experienced the unimaginable pain of losing your child, something shifts. You begin to realize just how precious life is. How quickly everything can change. And how little control we actually have over some of the things that matter most. You start looking at life through a different lens. And sometimes, that means you have less patience for things you once tolerated. Not because you’ve become a mean or uncaring person. Not because you think your grief gives you permission to hurt others. But because you’ve learned, in the most heartbreaking way imaginable, that your time, your energy, and your peace are precious. And you simply don’t have the emotional capacity for everything you once carried. I know this because I’ve experienced it myself. Losing my son changed me. It changed the way I look at relationships. It changed what I consider important. It changed how I spend my time and who I choose to spend it with. And it changed how willing I am to sacrifice my own peace just to make someone else comfortable. But here’s something else I’ve learned. We can allow grief to change us without allowing it to harden every part of us. We can have stronger boundaries and still have compassion. We can protect our peace and still love deeply. We can recognize what no longer belongs in our lives without feeling guilty for letting it go. And perhaps one of the hardest things to accept is that the person we were before our child died may never fully return. But that doesn’t mean we have to lose ourselves completely. Sometimes, finding our way through grief means learning who we are now. Not replacing the person we used to be. Not forgetting the child we love. But slowly finding our way home to ourselves, carrying everything we’ve lived through. I came across a thought today that really stayed with me: Some storms don’t just break branches. They change the way the tree grows forever. And I think that describes the loss of a child in a way few words can. We are changed. We carry scars. We grow differently. But we are still here. And we are still worthy of love, understanding, and peace. To the grieving parents reading this… Have you noticed that losing your child changed what you’re willing to tolerate in your life? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Because I have a feeling there are many parents who have experienced this but haven’t quite known how to put it into words. I’m still listening. 🤍 #grievingparents #GriefSupport #imstilllistening #youarenotalone #childloss
