actually corsets and stays would've been comfortable because they would've been mostly bespoke garments that were tailor fit to your exact measurements. Any "corset" you've tried in the modern era that you've bought online without a fitting, whether for ren faire or a costume or otherwise, isn't anywhere near the same thing and is of course going to have its own discomfort because it's not tailored to the shape of your specific body.

There were fashion corset, which is what you probably imagine when you hear corset but there were definitely comfort corsets that were regularly worn when not in a situation that needed the put together look. Typically society/social activities.
