But AI is far from the only industry consuming huge amounts of water. Agriculture, food production, beverages, and manufacturing also use billions of litres every single year. Nestlé, for example, operates a vast network of factories and brands that all require water. Comparing these industries is genuinely difficult, because companies measure and report water usage in completely different ways. AI’s water consumption absolutely deserves attention, but blaming ChatGPT alone ignores the much larger picture of global industrial water demand.
