@chickenstripes444: Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. After the United States acquired Florida, the fort—then known as Fort Marion—was used to imprison Indigenous people, including Native prisoners from the Seminole Wars and Indigenous prisoners brought from the American West. Fort Matanzas, built by the Spanish in the 1700s, guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine. Its history is also connected to the broader story of Spanish colonization, Indigenous resistance, and the struggle for control of Florida.
