My neighbor kept telling me that if I didn't keep my dog locked inside, one day I'd regret it — I thought she was being dramatic, until a friend called from the other side of town: "Roy's with her right now. It's definitely your neighbor. You're not going to believe where she's taking him." I let my dog out in the yard on Tuesday morning like I've done a thousand times. We've got a fence. He's a six-year-old beagle and he's never once got out of that yard. I open the back door; he does his business; he scratches to come back in. That's the whole routine. My neighbor has had a problem with him since the day we moved in. He barks too much. He goes to the toilet too close to her side. She can smell him. She told me once that a dog that size shouldn't be in a yard this small, and when I said he's a beagle, she said she knows what she's looking at. It's never only the dog, either. It's my bins, my car, my kids on their bikes. She's that neighbor. You learn to say okay and go back inside. So I let him out and went to fold laundry. Twenty minutes later, I opened the door and called him, and nothing happened. I walked the whole fence line. I looked under the deck. I was out on the street in my slippers calling his name at half past nine in the morning. Then my phone rang. It was a friend of mine. She said she was on the other side of town and she'd seen something she couldn't make sense of. "I think that's your neighbor. And I'm almost sure that's Roy in her arms. I'm sending you the photo." The photo came through while she was still on the line. It's her. Hand on his collar, my dog pressed up against her coat. I said that's him. That's my dog. Where are you? And then my friend went quiet, and I heard her start walking. "Oh. No. You're not going to believe where she's just taken him." "Where?" "I'm sending you the address. Get here. Right now." See less
