@soldastory: In the 1960s, an education outsider named Siegfried “Zig” Engelmann began challenging conventional thinking about how to teach young children. He went on to create a highly effective and deeply controversial program called Direct Instruction. Engelmann’s ideas remain divisive today, but his story has a lot to teach us about solving problems in education.
Turning our backs on direct instruction was maybe the biggest mistaken education history in America. Teacher here.

and exploratory learning has lots of research that backs it as well. IT'S A BALANCE NOT A MANDATE

Play-based learning as evidence as well. I think conflicting things happen in education all the time, when in reality we need to use these methods with intention and balance them! Because I do direct instruction methods when introducing new concepts and then we apply that knowledge through play. Interested to listen to more.

Direct instruction isn’t actually the best teaching method. It just gets kids to memorize things, it doesn’t get them actually learn it. Just because they can say words back at you doesn’t mean they know what those words and concepts mean

And this is how I learned to love math. This method right here. Could not understand why my kids struggled so much until I realized how they were teaching it. Exploratory math DOES NOT WORK.

Bro didn’t teach them no algebra 🤣 he taught them to use arithmetic to solve algebra problems. Which is why we see students failing to solve basic algebra concepts.

This is how Singapore math does it. It’s very exciting to watch your kids be able to do algebra and fractions quite young. It’s just common sense and very visual.

Education needs both of these trains of thought combined. There are some things that the best way to learn is just to be told. And some subjects that you need to think for yourself and use the scientific method. Right now it just feels like there are no wrong answers and everyone passes.
