That rich red carpet follows the curve upward, framed by polished wood and a railing filled with scrolling leaves. With every turn, another detail comes into view: glowing wall sconces, decorative arches, and that beautifully carved folding screen on the landing. I kept turning around, too. When the stairs look this good behind you, walking forward takes a little discipline. Then, at the top, the view opens onto the Great Hall. Veined stone columns frame the gallery, gold ornament stretches across the room, and a painted sky floats overhead. From here, you can appreciate the Italian courtyard inspiration behind architect Richard Morris Hunt’s design.
