@juno_aventurine: Taking responsibility for your own emotions means doing some work to analyze how your emotional reactions to things are not only caused by other people’s behavior, and are not entirely other people’s responsibility to manage or prevent. Of course, what this looks like depends on the context. I am not arguing for hyper-individualist ideas that “no one else ever causes how you feel and no one has to consider you.” But, your feelings of discomfort, hurt, “harm,” etc. do not necessarily mean that someone has done anything wrong or oppressive to you and that they must be accountable and change in order for you to feel better. You can be accountable for your own emotions and perceptions in response to other people by accepting that you just have different needs, desires, boundaries, and interpretations of reality. This doesn’t mean that we don’t show care for each other or recognize the impact that we can have on other people. But, we shouldn’t always expect people to avoid doing or saying anything that makes us uncomfortable or puts us in pain, because that effectively makes us slaves to other people’s emotions and perceptions of reality (which are subjective) all of the time. #safespaces #socialjusticewarrior #queerspaces #identitypolitics #cancelculture
