@couriernewsroom: New York City is moving to end horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park. The City Council is expected to approve a bill next week phasing out the rides by 2028. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office says he’s reached a deal with Speaker Julie Menin on the legislation. The push follows the death of Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old visiting from India, who died in June after jumping from a runaway carriage to help his mother, who had been thrown from her seat. It appears to be the first fatality involving the carriages since they were introduced. His family has repeatedly urged the city to end the rides. Three consecutive mayors called for a ban, and each effort stalled under pressure from unions and high-profile supporters. The Transport Workers Union is again opposing the bill, saying it offers no meaningful economic relief for drivers. The bill would require a workforce transition plan for drivers, allow the city to consider compensation, and prohibit selling the horses for slaughter.
