@paladin.archives: Burying treasure with “X marks the spot”? 🏴☠️💰 Complete fiction! Real pirates almost NEVER buried their loot, so where did our favorite pirate legends actually come from? 🦜🗺️ Uncover the real history behind pirate rules, tavern spending, and the rainy day that changed pop culture forever! 🌊⚔️ Did you know? 💡 Real pirates split their loot immediately, as agreed in their ship’s rules, and spent most of it on drink and gambling by the next port! 💡 Captain William Kidd was the only famous exception who buried gold near New York to buy his freedom, but it was dug up within weeks! 💡 Iconic pirate tropes—like treasure maps, “X marks the spot”, parrots, and peg legs—were invented by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island! Ebben Floyd :
People buried treasure all the time, it's an ancient practice, leaving clues and maps and keys to the family to be passed down for generations; pirates buried treasure too, but that was often only temporary to avoid getting caught with stolen goods, but many pirates did bury excess on remote islands instead of leaving it in the ship's hold or at a bank; these people are trying to rewrite history into their own narrative
