But how do you learn to write it? isiXhosa, like English, has synonyms, idioms (amaqhalo), and complex grammar. Speaking a language at home and knowing how to read and write it are two different things. That’s why South Africa prioritises home language education too.

You can only be Kenyan if you can speak three languages fluently; English, Swahili and your tribal language. In rural Kenya students are taught how to write their tribal language upto grade three when it’s discontinued. English is fully taught while Swahili mostly comes naturally even though it’s fully taught. Besides, every tribe in Kenya seems to have its own TV channels and radio stations Incase you missed learning your tribe in early years.

swahili is our unifying tribal language...for those wondering... also...swahili originated from Kenya and Tanzania... so... it's all our mother tongue... but we have a second mother tongue...our tribal languages... which we speak at home.... as Kenya has become very intertwined....
