Whalefall (2026) follows Jay Gardiner, a young scuba diver struggling with grief and unresolved feelings following the death of his father, Mitt. Hoping to recover his father’s remains from the waters off California’s coast, Jay embarks on a dangerous underwater mission. However, his search takes a terrifying turn when he is swallowed by an enormous sperm whale, leaving him trapped inside one of the ocean’s largest creatures. With only one hour of oxygen remaining, Jay faces an almost impossible fight for survival. Trapped in a dark, confined environment with no obvious way out, he must rely on his diving skills, resourcefulness, and determination to find a way to escape. As the clock continues to tick, every decision becomes a matter of life and death, and the possibility of returning to the surface grows increasingly uncertain. But Jay’s struggle is about more than simply escaping the whale. As he fights to stay alive, memories of his complicated relationship with his father begin to resurface. The lessons Mitt taught him throughout his life take on a new meaning, forcing Jay to confront the grief, guilt, and unresolved emotions he has carried for so long. In the middle of his desperate battle, he begins to discover a reason to keep fighting when he once felt he had little left to live for. Whalefall (2026) is a survival thriller directed by Brian Duffield and based on Daniel Kraus’s novel of the same name. Starring Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner and Josh Brolin as his father, the film combines claustrophobic underwater suspense with an emotional story about grief, forgiveness, and the complicated bonds between parents and children. .
