@stereogum: NYC’s CBGB closed 20 years ago today. The Patti Smith Group performed — joined by special guests Richard Lloyd of Television and Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers — and Talking Heads’ Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, the E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt, and Jesse Malin also attended.

Smith’s set paid tribute to fellow club alumni with covers of the Ramones, Television, and Dead Boys. She closed with “Elegie” and recited the names of musicians who had passed away since playing Hilly Kristal’s legendary club.

“Farewell CBGBs,” Smith remarked at the end of the show. “33 years: it’s the same age as Jesus.” 315 Bowery is now a John Varvatos store.
