I did POTS cable repair for AT&T for several years when I was younger. I would have to assume that her pair is in 3 wayed in with another line in terminal somewhere, basically creating a party line, and that NORAD has a pots line in that same cable somehow that opens a dialog at 7:00pm for updates

it has to do with the DEFCON system. CON4 means at the time we were at DEFCON 4 (second lowest readiness level). the levels aren’t supposed to be public knowledge

I used to have an old radio as a kid and I broke the plastic stopper from the station dial and I could turn it well below 88.0 and frequently picked up Morse code and audio transmissions from SAC base a couple miles from our house lol I'd spend hours in my basement listening after school 💀

Eh, one time in 2001 when we were living on Wright Patt AFB we logged onto our dial up internet and suddenly we heard garbled voices saying “911” and 10 minutes later a military police squad showed up at our house because they had gotten a “call” from our location and didn’t believe us when we said the internet dial up did it and they searched our house in case there was someone being kidnapped and held in a closet or something. I have this image of my bewildered dad being herded out of his bed in his underwear by men with M16s at 12:30 am and him just looking at my mom and I and resigning himself to the fact that we probably did something to cause this but for ONCE it wasn’t our fault 😭😭😭 technology is weird and shit like that happens occasionally, that’s why we use the codes. So even if they are sent to an old lady and her son records them and puts them on the Internet, it’s not going to make any sense without the code keys
