@armedforcesfacts: In the middle of the Bering Strait lie the Diomede Islands: Little Diomede belongs to Alaska in the United States, while Big Diomede belongs to Russia. Only about 3.8 kilometers separate them. The International Date Line runs between the two, so Big Diomede is almost a full day ahead and is nicknamed "Tomorrow Island." In winter the sea freezes and an ice bridge forms, but crossing it is illegal. During the Cold War this border became known as the "Ice Curtain," splitting families with relatives on both sides. In 1987, American swimmer Lynne Cox swam across in near-freezing water, and both Reagan and Gorbachev praised her crossing as a gesture of peace. #diomede #beringstrait #alaska #russia #usa
this is amazing, and yet I do hope for an American and Russian friendship in the future. wouldn't it be awesome to build a bridge and connect the world. !
