I wonder how involved Grandma was in their everyday lives? One possibility is that over the years, the lines between being a grandparent and being part of the parental team became blurred. But I'm actually leaning toward another possibility, given how Mom described their relationship. What if Grandma respected Mom and Dad as parents, but privately thought some of their rules were a little too strict? Over time, she developed a belief that her DIL was a little too controlling. And once we develop a belief about someone, we unknowingly start looking for evidence that confirms it. Then her sweet granddaughter, starts telling her how all her friends have phones and she feels left out. Grandma doesn't say anything, but quietly she thinks,
I wonder how involved Grandma was in their everyday lives? One possibility is that over the years, the lines between being a grandparent and being part of the parental team became blurred. But I'm actually leaning toward another possibility, given how Mom described their relationship. What if Grandma respected Mom and Dad as parents, but privately thought some of their rules were a little too strict? Over time, she developed a belief that her DIL was a little too controlling. And once we develop a belief about someone, we unknowingly start looking for evidence that confirms it. Then her sweet granddaughter, starts telling her how all her friends have phones and she feels left out. Grandma doesn't say anything, but quietly she thinks, "I get it, kid." Eventually, she convinces herself that Mom and Dad's rule is ACTUALLY hurting her granddaughter socially. So she buys the phone, rationalizes keeping it secret, and nine months later, it all comes out. Now, obviously, we don't know if that's what happened, but I’m trying to make sense of this. Most of us can relate to having justified a decision in our own minds, especially when it comes to loved ones. We convince ourselves we're helping and lose sight of the harm we're causing. I wonder, now that everything is out in the open, whether Grandma is genuinely remorseful. Does she understand the position she put her granddaughter in? That’s what I REALLY want to know. Again, I’m leaning towards the later partly because of the way Mom describes her relationship with Grandma, as one with lots of trust. And because if grandma had a long-standing pattern of undermining them, Mom would have had gobs of examples, she didn’t give any, although that doesn’t mean they don’t exist (just saying it sounded like total shock not final straw). So if I'm this mom, I want to understand what happened, how she got there, and whether she can take responsibility for it. And if she's genuinely remorseful and willing to rebuild that trust, I'm going to do what I reasonably can to repair such a valuable relationship. Source: Virgina Chamlee from People Magazine.
