The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has inspected ongoing construction and rehabilitation works at Awudome Cemetery to enhance security, improve accessibility, and facilitate vehicular and pedestrian movement. The project involves the demolition and reconstruction of sections of the cemetery's perimeter fence wall, as well as landscaping, pavement works, kerbs, surfacing and the development of pedestrian walkways to improve the facility's overall appearance and surrounding environment. Speaking after the inspection, the Mayor said the works commenced with site clearing and dewatering to remove accumulated water that had inundated portions of the project site. According to him the construction activities were currently concentrated on the eastern section of the cemetery's perimeter wall, particularly the stretch adjoining the main road opposite the State House, where reconstruction works were progressing. He disclosed that additional works would also be undertaken around the main entrance to the cemetery, including raising sections of the existing fence wall to improve its condition and provide a more uniform boundary. Beyond the reconstruction of the perimeter wall, the Mayor said the project would involve extensive landscaping and pavement works along the cemetery's frontage to improve accessibility, enhance the surroundings and facilitate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. The landscaping component, he added, would include the development of lawns, the installation of kerbs, gravel surfacing and the construction of designated pedestrian walkways to provide a more organised and accessible environment. Mayor Allotey said setting-out works had already commenced, with areas designated for kerbs, lawns, gravel surfaces and pedestrian walkways clearly marked to guide the subsequent phases of construction. He pointed out that the proposed walkways would also improve pedestrian access to the mosque area and an existing water kiosk, constructed by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly while the pavement and gravel works would enhance movement and improve the general condition of the cemetery's frontage.
