The study: researchers at the University of Zurich (Cervia-Hasler et al., Science, 2024) followed 113 COVID patients and 39 healthy controls for up to a year and measured more than 6,500 proteins in their blood. In the 40 who went on to develop long COVID, one system stood out as persistently abnormal: the complement system, part of the innate immune system, was stuck in an over-activated state, alongside markers of abnormal clotting, tissue damage, and red blood cell injury. Context for why this matters: complement isn’t measured on a standard CBC, metabolic panel, or CRP, and the technology to scan thousands of blood proteins at once only became widely available within the last several years, which is part of why this went unseen for so long. The authors describe these as “potential biomarkers,” meaning the field is moving toward an actual diagnostic test, and drugs that target the complement pathway are already being studied as possible treatments. This is specific to long COVID, and it’s an early, high-quality finding rather than settled science. I’m not a doctor, just someone who reads the research. How long were you told it was anxiety before anyone looked deeper? Source: Cervia-Hasler C, et al. Persistent complement dysregulation with signs of thromboinflammation in active Long Covid.
