I’m 45, and I am embarrassed to admit: 1. I survived 21 months of homelessness while studying my degree and told almost no one. I became so used to crisis that rest still feels unsafe. 2. I became the first visible Muslim woman Director in UK Government EVER, and some days it felt less like achievement and more like pressure not to fail publicly. 3. I have battled depression, complex trauma, and physical attacks because of what I represent. I have left hospital and still shown up to work composed the next morning. 4. I have been publicly humiliated, shoved, pushed from moving transport, and falsely accused. I carried that fear quietly because I didn’t feel safe speaking about it. 5. I was praised for being resilient when I was actually alone. No safety net. No powerful sponsor. A very small support circle. 6. Everybody around me has a Nurjahan in their life. I have never had a Nurjahan for me. 7. One setback can send me spiralling into self-doubt. I am learning to be ambitious without being cruel to myself. 8. I have filmed and deleted more videos than I have posted. I still feel embarrassed admitting I want to grow here, even though I know this work helps women who feel alone. 9. I have struggled with my weight most of my adult life. Chronic stress and survival leave marks you can see. 10. I thought being exceptional would protect me. It didn’t. Strategy, not excellence, protects you. 11. I teach strategic positioning because I refuse to let another woman learn power through isolation and silence the way I did. I teach women to be positioned, not tolerated. So they are not exceptional and invisible, but strategic and protected. Posting this is uncomfortable. But pretending strength came without cost would be dishonest. If you have ever felt capable but alone, you do not need permission to rise. And you do not have to learn this the hard way.
