@kelseywood99: Also!! There’s a difference between putting that expectation on your child and them genuinely wanting to do it. If they genuinely want to take care of you, great!! But there should never be that expectation 🫠 #caretaker #parents #caretaking #selfish #childfree

been supporting my mom emotionally and financially since I was a teenager and she will never be able to fathom the depths of my resentment.

Exactly. Since I didn’t have kids, I have the finances to invest in nicer end of life care. And yeah, no one should expect their child to take care of them, caregiving the sick and elderly is BRUTAL especially when you have an emotional bond to them.

I work at a nursing home and all of the residents got kids but most of them don’t visit. It’s a big misconception. Having kids ≠ being taken care of😆

I’m not going to take care of my mom. I didn’t know we were supposed to be taking care of our parents. I’m childless and happy. When I’m older I’ll be living in an assisted senior facility or a cruise ship lol.

Perfectly said! Thank you for putting my messy thoughts about this into a coherent message. 😁 this shouldn’t be a hot take, it’s just real!

Not wanting to be a burden on our family is deeply tied to individualism common in white culture

I completely agree! Also there is no guarantee that you will have a child capable of taking care of you, or that they will live longer than you, or that they have a good enough relationship with you to want to take care of you. Obviously I would hope to have a good relationship with my children but there is no guarantee of any of those things.

And put that burden on other people’s kids. 🫣 your parents took care of you when you could not speak or get food for yourself. It’s the circle of life. We are so far removed from the circle of life due to capitalism it’s always “I can’t just pay someone else” and the standard going rate is $20,000 a month. My mom wasn’t even a good mom and I didn’t talk to her and I still went back and took care of her on her death bed. 🤷‍♀️

By their logic everyone should have kids right? So chances are pretty high you’re gonna have kids to take care of at the same time that your parents get elderly and you’re supposed to take care of them at the same time?? Insanity
