“I believe you. This is not your fault. We will get help together.” When a child discloses online sexual abuse, a parent’s response matters. Doubt, blame or dismissal can leave children feeling isolated and afraid to seek help. Listening with care can help them feel safer and supported. At ChildSafeNet, we encourage parents and caregivers to follow these ten tips: WHAT TO DO 1. Believe and Reassure Take the disclosure seriously. Thank the child for telling you and explain that the abuse is never their fault. 2. Listen without Pressure Let them speak at their own pace. Avoid interrogation or asking them to repeat distressing details. 3. Support and Empower Help them understand boundaries, privacy and grooming in age-appropriate language. Involve them in decisions about their safety. 4. Seek Professional Help Contact police or child protection services and seek counselling from a professional experienced in supporting children affected by sexual abuse. 5. Protect Evidence Safely Record usernames, links and dates. Seek police guidance on preserving the device and messages. Do not download, copy or forward sexual images or videos of children. WHAT TO AVOID 6. Do not Blame or Shame Questions such as “Why did you send that?” can deepen distress. Responsibility lies with the person committing the abuse. 7. Do Not React with Anger or Panic Stay calm. Children need reassurance that telling you was the right decision. 8. Do Not Minimise the Harm Abuse online can have serious consequences for a child’s safety and wellbeing. 9. Do Not Confront the Suspected Abuser Seek professional support rather than trying to investigate or resolve it yourself. 10. Do Not Expose the Child’s Identity Share information only with those who need it to protect and support the child. Explain whom you need to tell and why. Build trust before a crisis. Make sure children know they can turn to you without fear of punishment. www.childsafenet.org #Parenting #ChildOnlineSafety #childsafenet @SmartParentingNepal @TechPana @UNICEF Nepal @Nepal Police @Vianet Communications @Cyber Bureau | साइबर ब्यूरो @Rato Bangala School MUN 2023 @Naya Patrika
