As a special needs parent of a child who will always be dependent on them, one thing I’m grateful for is that I was fairly young when Thomas was born. I was 23 when he was born and now he is 19 years old. I’m grateful that I’m the only person in the world that he calls “Daddy.” It’s the greatest gift I could ever ask for. Some people focus on the struggles/difficulty of having a child with Autism, but that will not happen here. I focus on the positive aspect of it. At 19 years old Thomas still has a heart that is pure and full of love. He has no hate in his heart for anyone. He is still that same innocent, sweet little boy he was when he was born. We both worked really hard to get him to where he is today. What you see today was years and years of overcoming obstacles that originally may have limited what he does today. For those that may not be aware yet, I was diagnosed with Autism in 2022. Although I wasn’t officially diagnosed until 2022, I suspected it when he was a toddler. Watching him grow up he reminded me a lot of myself and I understood why he would do this or that. It helped me as a parent, especially for a child who could not speak, because I knew that feeling that he was feeling. It helped me to think like him. One thing I’m fully confident in is my ability to be the father he needed and deserved. The father I would have wanted. The father that I would have wanted to look up to. I know that what I do as a father is extremely rare in today’s society and no one can ever take that away. #autism #happybirthday #43 #specialneedsparent #father
