3 rounds of Breath of Fire in the Biesbosch near Dordrecht during golden hour. This is still one of my favorite places and times of day for breathwork. Soft golden light, hardly anyone around, and enough time to completely focus on the breathing. Breath of Fire, often associated with Kapalabhati or Skull Shining Breath, is very different from the slow breathing exercises I usually share. The exhale is short and active, created by contracting the abdominal muscles, while the inhale happens more passively as the abdomen relaxes. For this session I did 3 rounds, with a short period of normal breathing and recovery between each round. I prefer doing it this way rather than treating rapid breathing as one long continuous exercise. Each round becomes its own short burst of focused, intense breathing followed by stillness. Breath of Fire is an activating technique. Rapid breathing increases ventilation and can temporarily lower CO₂ levels, which helps explain sensations such as tingling, warmth, increased alertness, or lightheadedness. Research on Kapalabhati has also reported acute changes in cardiovascular and autonomic activity, while smaller studies suggest possible effects on attention, cognitive performance, respiratory function, and stress. Evidence specifically for this technique is still limited, so I don't see it as a miracle exercise. For me, the best part is often the contrast between the rounds. The breathing itself feels intense and demands my full attention. Then I stop, breathe normally, and everything suddenly feels quiet. After three rounds, that mental reset can feel completely different from what I get from slow breathing. I work with people privately through 1-on-1 breath coaching, single consultations, and a small monthly library with longer sessions. I keep it small so there’s real attention. You can reach me at [diederikcornelis@gmail.com](mailto:diederikcornelis@gmail.com). Disclaimer: Breath of Fire is an intense breathing exercise and can cause dizziness, tingling, or lightheadedness. Practice seated or lying down somewhere safe and stop immediately if you feel unwell. If you are pregnant or have cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, or blood-pressure-related conditions, seek medical advice before practicing. Never practice while driving, in or near water, or anywhere dizziness or fainting could cause injury. #breathoffire #kapalabhati #skullshiningbreath #breathingexercises #breathingtechniques
