Meet the fimbriae. 🔬 In this cadaver dissection you can see the ovary, the uterine tube, and the structures bridging them. The end of the uterine tube, the fallopian tube, is not fused to the ovary. It opens into a fringe of tiny finger-like projections called the fimbriae. At ovulation, the ovary releases its egg into the space around it, not straight into the tube. The fimbriae sweep over the surface of the ovary and gently draw that egg into the opening of the uterine tube, where it starts its journey toward the uterus. A free floating egg, a tube that isn’t even attached, and a fringe of tissue whose whole job is to make sure they meet.
