The idea that locs is associated with dirtiness and not being ‘’masculine” enough in the African community has irked me for the longest time. When studying history and colonialism we learn that hair has always been a gateway to systemically oppress black people, by telling us our hair isn’t “civilised” enough and that it’s “unkept” and this mindset has seeped into Africa’s modern day viewpoint on ourselves. It’s so important we deconstruct this idea that our hair in its natural state is “unkept” “untidy” and dirty, our obsession with whiteness is so prominent, it makes me so mad. They’d rather we chemically straighten our hair with relaxers or have no hair at all, than express ourselves in a way that showcases the beauty of our natural hair.

I hate anti-Black stereotypes. pressuring ppl to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards at the expense of embracing their natural identity is honestly so sad

you are so very right, i had a situation where i cut off my very long hair that took me a few years to grow, i really loved my hair especially because of my curl texture and when i cut off my hair a lot of people in my life even most of all black people said i looked professional and clean, it hurt alot so i just distanced myself from people and now my hair isn't yet close to my length before i cut it but i'm relearning to love my long hair and embrace it. but thanks for bringing this point up when it comes to internalised racism

Literally reminds me of how my brother wanted to do twists with his grown out hair after the holidays last year but he had to cut it because the school said it was “unkempt”, mind you that’s best I’ve ever seen it😭

I don’t think this is specific to black men, i may be wrong as I am not black nor a man but from my pov I think all men are affected by this, many people view men with long hair as unprofessional and respect those more who keep their hair short. This doesn’t necessarily relate to internalised racism, I see it more as a general stereotype set for men by….men.
