Mahmoud Darwish (1941–2008) was one of the most beloved poets of the Arab world, a Palestinian writer whose words gave voice to love, exile, longing, and the sorrow of losing a place to call home. Born in the village of al-Birwa in Palestine, he experienced displacement at a young age, carrying memories of his homeland throughout a life marked by separation, loss, and the search for belonging. Yet Darwish’s poetry was never confined to the struggles of his people. He wrote with extraordinary tenderness about the fragility of love, the loneliness of being human, the passing of time, and the people and places that remain within us long after they are gone. His verses had a way of making deeply personal feelings seem universal, finding beauty in ordinary moments and giving words to the quiet ache of missing someone or something we can never fully recover.
