@theeladyphilosophy: Your idea of “Culture” does not magically make you Nigerian . It makes you British with a hint of Nija flare #nigeriantiktok🇳🇬 #british #identity #black #fyp

What is Nigerian culture? What you’re trying to say is we have Yoruba-British, Hausa-British, etc. they aren’t Nigerian.

Black british & Nigerian aren’t binaries & I think many would say they’re both. I still think some flattening is still happening but I think definitions would be helpful. For example, you say culture isn’t just music, food, etc & that FGM is also Nigerian culture. I’d push back on that bc it’s definitely not part of a majority culture in Nigeria but even if it was, FGM is a good example of a cultural practice that gets imported into the UK, despite it being illegal. Nigeria is an extremely patriarchal & religious society and that that patriarchy & religious fervour is also imported. It’s why we see so many stories of abuse on social media (esp tiktok) from young Nigerians. Nigeria is also extremely classist & hierarchical, which why so many Nigerians come here & vote Tory. This isn’t to say that Nigeria’s politics affect diasporic Nigerians in the same way tho, it doesn’t.

I knew when I bullied for having a British accent when I schooled in Nigeria. Had to even change a lot of it to be accepted

I agree to an extent but I do think Nigerians do still have similarities in their upbringing to British Nigerians But your accent? Is it fully British I can’t tell.

There are also Nigerians that were born and grew up in Nigeria and still deviate from culture, are they also not Nigerian or is this specifically only for those born outside?

I mean they still are especially if their parents came from Nigeria to Britain. Still raised within their culture so they can claim it, do understand that we are also black British though and some people try to move from that

(Sorry for overstepping as a non Brit/English person) I wonder if acceptance for many feels like theyre ‘not accepting their roots’… but the diaspora has always been vast. Took me a long time to accept I’m 1st Gen Scandinavian, born abroad but raise with a very specific aspects of Cameroonian culture. I’ve found a lot of peace within accepting I’m probably not very Cameroonian, but I’ll always be a child/woman of the diaspora.

Not Nigerian but I definitely label myself British Congolese. I do think that there are some people who have closer proximity to their country for example, maybe they travelled back every year so they may label themselves I.e. Nigerian and not British. But there’s definitely a difference between someone raised in Britain and someone who was raised in the motherland 😅

I don’t think you can culturally disconnect like that if you’re only one generation separated. I think you could acknowledge both identities but to completely cut your parents heritage off is weird to me.
