Shadow has lived his entire life out of reach of social norms, his entire life with a burdening duty and baggage that only seems to pile on further, and a life that never settles. I don't think he'd be most versed in the art of slowing down for pastimes, when he has so many more urgencies to attend to; even aside that, I just don't believe he'd do well idle. Knuckles is very similar, with guardianship of the Master Emerald. Except I think he's the most equipped for 'slowing down', having living his entire youth alone upon an island, tending to and guarding it and its inhabitants. What he lacks is social connections, which he has Sonic and Tails for, but he never seeks it out for a supposed lack of desire and what I'd believe to be uncertainty in how to approach it when he is who he is. Both are very similar in personality, which is what causes them to butt heads (which is often the case with Sonic characters), but could be the same reason they acquaint. With disregard for social norms, a shared burden in duty, and confusing knots in their heritage (or really just general past, in Shadow's case), I feel they're characters who could understand eachother on a deeper plane. I like to think that it begins in sparring. Knuckles is formidable, and Shadow likes to test his own limits and surpass them. Plus, I think they'd find particular interest in each other as sparring partners. Being that Knuckles can sense chaos energy, and I'd like to think that Shadow is a tricky and rather versatile/adaptive opponent. A bit of challenge that betters them both! From thereon, simply bonding. Essentially, I think they both can offer what the other needs. Shadow requires a partner he can sustain trust and confidence in, a partner who can keep up with his pace, and a partner who can especially respect his autonomy. Knuckles is steadfast, and consistent, perfectly capable of these things, and I don't feel he's much the type to impede so long as it doesn't involve endangering Angel Island. Knuckles requires a partner who can actually be there, a partner who won't feel offense in the event of his prioritizing the Island over them, and a partner who can respect his history and support him in the ways he'll allow. Shadow, too, is capable of these things in turn, especially not in regards to Angel Island. He, of anyone, can understand duty. Not specifically listed, but I think they'd be able to assist eachother in the subtler ways without prickling egos about self-reliance.
