Have you ever watched someone's eyes change during an intense argument? People online sometimes call it “the narcissist's eyes” — their expression changes, their pupils look larger, and suddenly they seem like a completely different person. But what's actually happening scientifically? Your pupils aren't controlled purely by conscious choice. During intense emotional arousal — anger, fear, excitement, stress or confrontation — the sympathetic nervous system can become more active. Your brain essentially prepares your body for action. Adrenaline and noradrenaline are involved in this stress response. Your heart rate can increase, your breathing can change, blood flow is redirected, and your pupils can dilate. Why? Because pupil size is regulated by the autonomic nervous system, and dilation can occur when the body enters a heightened state of arousal. So when someone describes a narcissist's “mask slipping,” what they may actually be noticing is a combination of physiological arousal and behavioural changes: Their facial muscles tense. Their expression changes. Their voice changes. Their body becomes activated. And their pupils may become larger. Put all of those changes together, and the person's eyes can suddenly appear darker or more intense. But here's the important part: Dilated pupils do not mean someone is a narcissist. Lighting, medication, substances, attraction, fear, anger, excitement and numerous other factors can change pupil size. So there's no scientific “narcissist pupil test.” What science does tell us is that our eyes can reveal changes in autonomic arousal — sometimes before we're even consciously aware of how activated our body has become. And that may be part of what people are seeing when they say: “Their eyes completely changed.” #narcissist #narcissisticabuse #survivor #mentalabuse #healingfromabuse @Lisa Sonni have you seen this before?
