Are rocket thrusters and mid-air stunts the future of hypercars? Tesla’s long-delayed second-generation Roadster just made its official live demonstration debut at SpaceX’s McGregor facility, and Elon Musk brought stunt driving straight out of a video game to real life. Operating autonomously to demonstrate its SpaceX-engineered hardware, the Roadster prototype pulled off two unprecedented feats: Executing a flat-ground kickflip, perimeter cold-gas compressed-air thrusters generating over 80 kN of force launched and rotated the car mid-air directly over a line of current Teslas. Demonstrating upside-down driving, floor-mounted suction fans pulled air from underneath to lock the chassis to an inverted halfpipe structure before thrusters cushioned its vertical landing.
