The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus), a party historically associated with Afrikaner and minority rights, is attracting attention amid reports of growing interest from black South Africans. In January 2026, party leader Dr Corné Mulder said the party had received new membership applications from people across different communities, including black South Africans. The party also recorded a significant increase in support in a Tshwane ward by-election in January 2026, rising from approximately 16% in the 2021 local elections to 44.38%. However, this result reflects one ward and cannot establish a nationwide trend. The growing online attention around Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald has also raised questions about whether some voters are beginning to look beyond traditional party loyalties. But there is an important distinction: social media enthusiasm, new party memberships and actual votes are three different measures. National polling and representative voter surveys are needed to establish how widespread this shift really is.
