Because when it’s expired it’s no longer valid documentation. They expire bc personal details can change, and it can prevent fraudulent activity. I get it’s annoying but that’s why you stay on top of it.

In the UK expired IDs are fine as long as the other details are accurate and it has the pass hologram.

Do people actually not get this? The picture on it expires, not the info. u probably don't look the same as 10 years ago, that is why you have to update it. An officer needs to be able to see in an instant that it is you on the picture. If you have a picture of 10 year old you on there they won't recognize u when ur 18 (especially since some countries have very loose rules on the ID pics) They make you renew it after so many years so they can IDENTIFY you, which is literally the purpose of the ID

I would think it’s to avoid fraud. If you throw out your old expired ID or someone finds it or you give it to someone, say who is under 21 so they can go to the bar. People also change after so many years. I just got my license renewed and I don’t even look like the same person.

I hate this rule, when I worked check in at Urgent Care they would tell me to turn people away with a expired ID. Like what? Why? Its still them, the medical insurance isnt expired. I NEVER followed that rule.

I dont have an issue with this especially since ive had my id stolen and a teen tried to use it for beer ,I dont look my ate and still get carded at 30 and was lucky my card just expired when it was stolen

the actual answer is because ids get updated every so often with new security features to prevent duplication and false ID manufacturing.

Because you need to pass two requirements before… buying alcohol for example. You must be 21 AND have a valid license. It’s not just about being 21+

We know it's stupid as fuck but as a bartender we are at so much risk with the regulations around checking IDs that we can lose our license to serve alcohol and/or face jail time if we're caught not properly identifying customers. We don't want to refuse expired IDs but we also don't want to lose our income.
