@calmmoneycoach: WHICH PROVINCE LEAVES YOU THE MOST MONEY AT THE END OF THE YEAR? Which province leaves you with the most money at the end of the year? I took the typical full-time wage in each province, put that person in its biggest city, and took off tax, rent, groceries, power, car insurance and sales tax. Montreal came out on top with about $24,000 left. Calgary was next at about $23,000. Halifax came last at about $14,000, and yes, I checked that twice. Pay and rent move the most money. Typical pay is about $13,600 a year apart between the highest and lowest provinces, and a 1 bedroom is about $8,700 apart, close to $12,000 on a new lease. Tax matters more as your income goes up: about $3,900 apart on $70,000 and about $9,600 on $150,000. Sales tax, groceries, power and car insurance mostly cancel out. On those 4, the 10 cities finish within about $1,600 of each other. Your own pay changes the order. Up to about $70,000, the lower rent provinces win. From about $150,000 it's Alberta. And the city matters as much as the province: typical pay in Ottawa is about $18,000 higher than in St. Catharines. 3 things I'd keep 1. Compare what's left after tax and bills, on the pay you'd earn there. 2. Pay and rent move the most money, and tax matters more as your income goes up. 3. Sales tax, groceries, power and car insurance mostly cancel out. Money is only part of where you live. Your family, your friends and the view aren't on my spreadsheet.
