my first detention I ever gave, I learned he was the oldest of 9 and had to make dinner every night and help his siblings with homework. he was the adult at home and acted out at school. it was a 60 min detention, and we spent 45 min throwing a ball back and forth outside, just talking. we never had an issue after that. a few years later, he was shot in the head during a drive-by. I think of him every time I consider raising my voice at students.

Had a student that would fall asleep daily in 3rd grade. Came to find out she was living in a shelter and told me "I fall asleep in your classroom because that is where I am safest"

Mr ingle never let anyone sleep or use headphones in his class. When he found out why I wasnt going on junior trip (I was paying rent and working 2 jobs, plus some other things) ... he made me his teachers aide. I got a Gatorade, a quiet classroom, and headphones while I graded papers and took a nap every day. Ill never forget it. He also found funding & i got to go to Junior trip. Its the only time I ever got to see the ocean, was thanks to him.

Me when I found out that the student everyone complains about for always talking and being loud is the only child of two deaf parents. Suddenly, it all made a little more sense 😭😭😭😭

And then you have the happiest student who should have all the reasons to hate the world… but somehow doesn’t. Those hurt waaaay worse

Man finding out his mother is being abused in front of him broke me. Every time he gets out the car now he runs and gives me a hug, then we go into my classroom before everyone gets there and he just vents. Just cries and tells me everything. He’s only 4. And he sees but doesn’t understand.

this is why when my students are falling asleep in class I let them sleep. if they come whisper to me that they want a snack I give them a snack. you never know when a child doesnt have somewhere to sleep or didn't get dinner or breakfast.

I was hell on wheels, became a teen dad and some of the greatest people around me were teachers. I still talk to them today at 33 they know all my kids now. They believed in a troubled kid and I had nothing to give back to them except using their support. I think teachers are so much more important than they believe. I didn’t deserve any of it and I had a lot of reasons.

I have worked with autistic children, teens, and adults for over 5 years now. My caseload is predominantly nonverbal kids. What their voices cannot say, their actions do… my heart breaks for each and every one of those kids when they have hard moments.

My 8th grade history teacher once sat me aside and asked if everything was okay at home. I was honest, and told him how bad it was. By then, CPS had already pulled me out of his class before to talk to me, so he knew something was up. He let me sit in his class whenever I was having a bad day, and let me talk about my home life in a safe place that I didn’t have to worry about getting in trouble. He even risked his job for me, I begged him not to tell anyone even though he was a mandated reporter, because my bio dad had lost his shit on me when CPS was called the first time, and I didn’t want to go through that again. He didn’t. Granted I made sure to be careful and not tell him about any direct abuse. I didn’t want to force him to make a choice. Thank you for seeing your students, a lot of us feel incredibly invisible with our struggles, it’s nice to know there’s teachers out there that still notice 🫂

I only drive a bus..but I see some of the homes I drop these kids off at. The bags under their eyes, the tiredness not just from lack of sleep. I make sure I ALWAYS smile and ask them “how was your day?” Or tell them “have the best day at school today!” Every single day

The worst 😭 I can't tell you how many times I have cried in our counselors office when I learn about why a student acts the way they do. Everyone deserves a fair and loving start.

I work ISS in a middle school - and let me tell you, the things these students have shared with me… it’s hard to turn my mind off after work because I can’t help but think about them and their safety after school ends…

I think people who grew up in stable, clean, loving environments can't even fathom the circumstances some kids survive daily, and then are expected to keep it together and complete homework, it's almost surreal

I am an elementary school behaviorist and honestly it has opened my eyes to the sad world we live in. These babies go through the absolute worst things and some still have a smile on their faces every day cause we're their safe place 🥲

my velcro student. has never lived with the same family member for more than a year at a time. just gets shuffled from one home to the next. told me he hopes his mom doesn't come back for him bc then he'd have to move and never see me again. As his teacher for two and a half years I am the most constant adult figure he has had in his little life💔
