Anatoly Fomenko is a professor at Moscow State University, a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a winner of the State Prize for mathematics. For half a century, he has argued that the timeline we learned in school was manufactured, and that ancient Greece, Rome and the pharaohs are distorted copies of medieval events. He started with the sky. He says the three eclipses recorded by Thucydides fit the years 1039, 1046 and 1057 AD, and that Ptolemy's famous star catalogue matches the sky between 600 and 1300 AD. With his partner Gleb Nosovsky, he claims Rome was founded around 1380, that Troy stood on the Bosphorus, and that the story of Jesus echoes the life of the Byzantine emperor Andronikos. And what was buried? A vast empire that ruled Eurasia until the 1600s. He calls it the Russian Horde. Old European maps called it Great Tartary. His books have sold over a million copies. In 1999, world chess champion Garry Kasparov wrote the foreword to one of them, saying the official timeline has "very serious inconsistencies which it is absolutely impossible to ignore."
