A 10-year-old shelter dog with a serious heart condition spent 791 days waiting for a permanent home in Hawaii before a woman who saw her story online decided to adopt her. Princess, a senior pit bull mix at Maui Humane Society, finally left the shelter system in June 2025 when volunteers helped fly her to her new family on the island of Oahu. Princess had originally been found as a stray in Hana, a remote community on Maui. She was severely underweight and was later diagnosed with congestive heart failure, a condition that requires ongoing medical attention. Although shelter staff described her as friendly and affectionate, her age, size, breed, and health problems made finding a permanent adopter especially difficult. Over the next two years, Princess received care from shelter workers and spent time in foster homes, but she remained without a permanent family. Volunteer Cassondra Christman eventually shared a video highlighting Princess's long stay and her need for someone willing to adopt a senior dog with serious medical needs. The video caught the attention of Ginger Cabais, an experienced animal rescuer living on Oahu. Cabais had spent years fostering dogs and helping transport rescue animals to new homes. She understood that Princess might require significant medical care and that their time together could be limited. After learning more about the dog, she contacted the shelter and made arrangements to bring Princess home. Before the trip, Maui Humane Society's veterinary team confirmed that Princess was medically cleared to fly. Volunteer pilots Bianca Vasquez and Jordan Lee helped transport her from Maui to Oahu, with Christman accompanying her on the journey. On her 791st day in the shelter system, Princess arrived at the home of the woman who had chosen to adopt her. By late June 2025, Cabais reported that Princess was settling into family life. She enjoyed rolling in the grass, playing with stuffed toys, and tapping her feet to get attention. Instead of sleeping in a shelter enclosure, she was now allowed to sleep on her adopter's bed. Princess still needed medication and care for her heart condition, but she had something she had gone without for more than two years: a permanent home. Her story shows how one adoption can make an enormous difference for an older dog, even when no one can promise how much time that dog has left. - @dog.glare
