When I was in college, the place I worked at wouldn't let me leave literally 5 MINUTES early so that I could catch the LAST bus of the night back to my dorm. This was in Milwaukee, it was a 4 hour walk, in the snow, and at night. I never felt more alone but also extremely proud of myself when I finally got home. 🥲

I eat whole boiled onions and heads of cabbage for lunch at work. Because I “like them”. They have made AI photos of my face on onions and cabbages. It’s many of their computer backgrounds.

I work at jobs with rich people. Even being invited to lunch I can’t afford and people get mad that I’m anti-social and don’t go out to eat weekly. No I pay my own bills and can’t afford to waste money.

people don't get how much being poor is really just wasted time and waiting. like, having money means paying for the convenience of not having to wait. missed the last bus home? well we can wait here until they start again in the morning or we can walk. either way, the cost is in time not money

Me at work when I say I take the bus. Legit had a coworker say to me “do you say that hoping someone will offer you a ride?” Like no I say that bc I take the bus like….????

Honestly it is so annoying. The amount of times I’ve given someone a ride and then when my car was totaled they acted like I was a burden. Like, wtf. They should’ve offered to drive you.

i got a pay rent notice and asked my manager for more hours. she told me no and i got kicked out. a month later after i moved from living across the street to a motel6 across town she would constantly complain about me not picking up shifts like i used to, so i told her i cant because i am literally homeless and have no means to get here. she got mad and said "well you could have told me you were going to end up homeless i could have given you more hours!"

when people ask why I look so out of it, or why I'm stumbling and I tell them it's because I hadn't ate anything that day because I can't afford to. they almost always get annoyed with me for "dry begging" them to buy me food. YOU asked ME why I hadn't eaten yet don't be pissy at me for answering

I come from what would be considered a "poor country" and I don't mind saying that because some people have 0 concept of what poverty looks like everywhere else. I grew up middle class in that country, I was relatively privileged, but when I moved to Canada and explained what I did growing up everyone seemed so shocked, and I realized that what I considered "middle class" was Canadian poor ┐ ( ´ ー ｀ ) ┌ and nowadays people are struggling with higher prices for everything and when I give advice for how to not spend on things they seem shocked, even though that's just. normal practice. for people who aren't rich. At least where I come from.

I would go into work at 6 am, even though I wasn't scheduled to be there until 10 am. Because I didn't have my own car. I would sit in the break room & read books for 4 hours before my shift started. I wouldn't get done working until 10 pm. Those were loooong days.

I’m not even poor and people react like that to walking. It’s like we’ve been conditioned to think walking somewhere is the enemy. But half the time there’s no bus, it’s not that far and it’s probably good for you to get some steps and fresh air.

Back when my car broke down in the workplace parking lot, I told my boss I'll just bus home instead. She asked if I use Uber or Lyft, to which I repeated that I was taking the bus, as in the actual bus line. She looked at me like I just spoke gibberish, and asked "what are you like broke? no one does that, busses are for (slur)." And then she tried to write me up for harassment because I told her not to use slurs in the workplace. 🙄😂
