I genuinely did not expect it to take America ten years to recognize what seemed obvious in 2016: Donald Trump’s public persona is built on exaggeration, grievance, self-promotion, and an extraordinary disregard for the truth. During his first presidential term alone, The Washington Post’s fact-checking team documented 30,573 false or misleading claims. Yet millions continued treating each new promise as if the previous contradictions had never happened. Trump promised affordable living, peace, restored manufacturing, better healthcare, and respect for America around the world. Instead, Americans are confronting stubborn inflation, expensive fuel, an unpopular war with Iran, manufacturing uncertainty, strained alliances, and constant political chaos. More voters now appear to be losing patience. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll placed Trump’s approval at only 35%, near the lowest level of his second term. That does not mean every American has rejected him, and his supporters remain intensely loyal. But the gap between Trump’s promises and the consequences of his leadership is becoming harder to ignore. The warning signs were never hidden. They were broadcast at rallies, repeated in interviews, and posted online almost daily. Some of us recognized the performance in 2016. The tragedy is how much damage occurred before more people finally began questioning it.
