This isn't just an anime. It is the real childhood trauma of a man who lived through hell. 💔 The terrifying 1983 film Barefoot Gen is entirely semi-autobiographical. The creator, Keiji Nakazawa, was exactly six years old, walking to his primary school in Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, when the bomb was dropped. He survived solely because a concrete wall blocked the initial thermal flash. But his reality afterward was pure horror. He personally had to watch his father, his older sister, and his younger brother burn alive beneath the ruins of their collapsed home while his pregnant mother shrieked in agony. For more than 20 years, Nakazawa hid the fact that he was a survivor due to the severe social stigma and discrimination faced by hibakusha (bomb survivors) in Japan. He drew lighthearted comics and ran away from his past. Everything changed in 1966 when his mother passed away. When her body was cremated, Nakazawa was horrified to find her bones had completely turned to ash destroyed from the inside out by radioactive cesium. Consumed by pure grief and rage that the atomic bomb had even stolen his mother’s bones, he picked up his pen and vowed to tell the absolute, uncensored truth. He didn't make this to blame foreign nations; he made it to expose the horrors of war and the radical military leaders who refused to let Japan surrender. 🕊️ Help keep his history alive.
