One of my FAVORITE parts of the school day is phonics small group! 🥹📚 We group our students based on data, and I work with many of my first graders who need extra support with foundational literacy skills, including ENL students who are new to the United States. One routine we practice is called “Say It Fast!” I say the sounds, students blend them together to say the word, and then we break the word back down into its individual sounds. We also discuss word meanings and make connections in Spanish to support our multilingual learners. ❤️ This is especially important because students are assessed on these foundational skills through DIBELS, where they have one minute to read as many words as they can. Our goal is to build accuracy and automaticity while quickly identifying misconceptions, correcting them, and moving on. This part of our lesson is only about 3–4 minutes, but those minutes MATTER! There is so much intentionality behind the little things we do in the classroom. 🫶🏼 #ScienceOfReading #StructuredLiteracy #TeacherTok #Literacy #Teaching
