not just quinces. baby showers, bautizos, birthday parties & becoming padrinos to random kids they don’t even know??!!!? I tried to explain to my mom how all that money spent could be used for a college fund for those kids & she said I just didn’t understand our culture.

Sometimes they also support their family members so it makes it harder.

The number 1 reason is that we are the children of peasant immigrants. So obviously we aren’t going to do as well as the general population a lot of things are still new to us. Like going to school, getting a job that isn’t manual labor, investing, etc. Not sure why people compare us to X people all the time when our starting line is completely different.

I have to go to our state capitol a lot for work. I always pass by photographers taking photos of quinceneras there. I want to scream at the parents - put that money in a 529 for your daughter for college! It makes me so mad to see them preyed upon.

I’ve learned not to be the hardest worker. It gets you nowhere. You have to be good enough to be considered good but not the best. You get taken advantage of. I r seen it happen to others. They take advantage of the pride we get from being the best worker. They exploit us. I’ve learned not to work my hardest and have moved though life much easier

Also goes beyond the quince, such as lack of planning prior to having children. In all aspects, financially, emotionally, etc.

Well my mom is a single mom, immigrant, and we did not have any of those things, but more so lack of knowledge of investing, retirement funds, 401k. I think she was just living paycheck to paycheck and just started learning how to save a decade ago maybe…

Something I will not be doing is blowing $20,000 + on a quince that lasts a couple hours, I guarantee a small intimate party will be just as memorable

whatever the reasons are, if we don't begin to value education we'll keep ourselves in a permanent servant class. it's 2026 & we have to start taking some responsibility for where we are. Plus the bullshit machismo culture & thinking you're "one of them" once you make over 50-60 thousand.

Just my perspective- my husband is Mexican, we’ve been together for 21 years. One thing I’ve consistently observed in the Mexican culture- you’re saving money? You’re trying by to save to pay cash? You’re considered “stingy” and you should be giving your money to someone else. My husband disagrees and wants to break the stigma and build generational wealth for our children. Our kids have 529s, we have a trust, we have life insurance, we bought a home. But so many see this as being selfish and stingy and that others should be benefiting from our hard work. We see it as we all our making sacrifices, including our kids- and he wants to give our family everything he didn’t have. But I’m the white American wife so it’s all my fault 🤣

I told my husband I didn’t want a baby shower. I’d rather just buy the things we need! He wanted the experience and so we had the baby shower… we STILL have several small things we need to buy 🙄

I’m first generation and finally I think we’re trying to get a generational wealth. My mother does not believe in credit cards but she does save in a lot of money unfortunately just sits there now as a finance girl I have to educate her that not all debt is bad debt. She’s really good at saving money, but it’s unfortunately just sitting there, but she knows how to buy land and houses super hard to educate the older generation. I’m still teaching her how to.

Most important reason is they come here looking for a better future and once they find stability they don’t take risk. Rich people take risk calculated but risk nonetheless. They invest hard in stocks, business or crypto. But it’s all that hard work that makes it hard to let that money go. Change happens with us who are fortunate enough to inform ourselves and learn
