@marissakumari: Dancing with the Stars has consistently inconsistent scoring, especially when it comes to Carrie Ann and Olympic gold medalist Amber Glenn. With her leg lift getting a 7, and her samba earning the same score as Tyler Cameron, it’s time to consider the same type of scoring system that figure skating and gymnastics use: a technical score and an execution score, with a clear rubric, and a fan vote for reality tv. #amberglenn #figureskating #dancingwiththestars #dwts #womenssports
A 1-10 score across the board is so confusing for me

How are actual ballroom competitions scored? Is that something that could be carried over somehow?

plus in today's world where young girls only want to be skinny, I'd think having visible muscle that amber gained due to her hard work is a good thing

I feel like a technical and artistry score from each judge would solve this problem.

I am so tired of Amber being lowballed on her scores

BUT isn’t their scoring system based on improvement? Like they get a sense of everyone’s level in week one and then base their judgement on how they grow week to week. I definitely think Amber has been underscored especially by Carrie Anne, but we can’t expect the judges to score everyone using the same threshold when some people have clear advantages like athleticism, age, or previous dance training in other styles

Thank you!! One of the reasons I haven’t gotten “into” DWTS is because there is no drama with the scoring- it’s always “everyone starts middling- everyone’s score improves as the season goes on. We all know people are coming in at different levels- make that part of their improvement score! Like a “bad” dancer coming in can be initially ranked as “novice” or “level 1” or whatever and ice skaters/gymnasts/“good” dancers can be ranked higher and *everyone* can be scored against their initial ranking instead of a super subjective 1-10

This. Because love him to death, but Guillermo never deserved anything above a 5. Honestly that’s even a stretch. He was nowhere near close to other contestants but yet was given high scores, almost tying some who are genuinely improving. One persons “best dance” is the same score as another’s semi good dance. It don’t make sense.

It would be helpful if they would specifically assign each judge to a particular aspect of the performance. Like Bruno judges artistry, Derek judges technique, and Carrie Ann judges performance/impact. Then whatever guest judge they have gives like ‘crowd appeal’ score or something (unless they have specific experience). I think the issue with Carrie Ann is that she’s always trying to judge all of those things all at once while only mentioning one or two of them in her verbal critique. I’d actually be really interested to see each judge’s more in depth critique to see exactly where and how points were deducted or added.

I honestly think that they've changed the rules over the last few years somebody needs to go read the fine print. where's that guy that reads the fine print

I don’t understand how to not show your muscles moving when actively moving said muscles. Dancers have muscles. Also I think having everyone do the same style of dance but different songs and choreography could put in perspective of how well the person is dancing.

Yes, although the ISU has many issues when it comes to scoring, a similar system could certainly help create structure in the scoring and give the pros something tangible to work with for the following weeks as well.

I totally agree, but I’d also like to add that it’s crazy to even compare scores when they’re all doing different dances. How can you truly compare a samba to a foxtrot to a jazz to a contemporary? They need to go back to the time where there was just one or two styles per episode. So either all of them would do the same one, or they’d do half and half.

In an actual ballroom competition there is a scoring rubric but it’s entirely based on the level of complexity and is less of how well you executed it and more of a check off. This is at least for smooth dances like waltz, foxtrot, and tango. And at certain levels, there’s rules. I wish with DWTS, we knew what level the judges are holding the dancers to, because if we’re holding every smooth dance to a silver standard then at least the scoring would be more consistent. But my best guess is if someone is scoring an 8 at a bronze level, their scores should not be held to the same standard as an 8 at a silver level ifykim?

Totally agree. But if that's too much, can we like... somehow adopt decimals to the scores? Makes the paddles less dramatics but would take away these silly ties that should NOT exist

The scoring has been all over the place since season one. I agree that this might be a good solution, given that the audience score is supposed to be the “popular vote” portion, but I don’t see them changing it anytime soon.
