People forget that bending is a martial art. It’s the equivalent of a kid knowing how to throw a punch or kick. It’s not a good one but they understand the premise of what to do. Same with bending

I think it’s pretty clearly a writing decision made to streamline later stories. It was integral in the first series that he had to journey and learn from masters to effectively use the elements, but they didn’t want to repeat the story structure so they just did away with it.

The other thing the Kyoshi books says the firebenders have a test for small children (I think infants even?) to see if they're fire benders. If a toddler can firebend without going to a master why couldn't the Avatar or anyone else...

Yeah, I’m not trying to see that again. We are so far past that we don’t need to slow burn the avatar learning the basic fall elements this time around. They need to know the basic elements pretty fast so we can get to sub bending. Kora in her final season learned metal bending so they need to ramp that up where the twins know multiple sub bending. techniques. and some that we haven’t even seen before that could be brand new. Which I hope is more fire subbing techniques because all we got is the combustion and lightning.
