Soldiers sleep in cargo planes, tents and under tarps. Here's how they do it, and how you can use the same tools at home tonight. The famous "military sleep method" comes from the 1981 book Relax and Win by coach Bud Winter. It was used to train US Navy pilots during WWII. The claim: after about 6 weeks of practice, most pilots could fall asleep within 2 minutes. The catch is the 6 weeks. It works because you practice it every night. 1. Relax top to bottom Relax your face and jaw, drop your shoulders, let your arms go heavy, take one long exhale, then relax your legs. Picture a calm scene for 10 seconds. If thoughts pop up, start again from your face. 2. Block out noise and light US Army sleep guidance recommends foam earplugs, a fan or a sleep mask. In a 2010 study in Critical Care, people sleeping in hospital-level noise and light got more REM sleep and woke up less often when they wore earplugs and an eye mask. 3. Same wake-up time every day Army sleep guidance: wake up at the same time every day of the week, weekends too. Aim for 7–8 hours. A steady wake-up time trains your body clock, so you get sleepy at the same time every night. 4. Still awake after 20 minutes? Get up Lying in bed frustrated teaches your brain that bed = stress. Get up, do something calm in dim light, and go back to bed when you feel sleepy. Sleep is a skill. Practice it every night, and your body learns to switch off faster. Save this for tonight and send it to someone who can't sleep. Follow @mackanfit for more science-based training, health and recovery. Sources: - Winter, B. (1981).
