You have an unspoken role in the system, and if you don’t meet its silent expectations, you’ll be punished. The guilt trips and family gossip start flying, and you think: What the heck just happened!? All I did was try to set a healthy boundary, communicate my feelings, and move a bit more independently through my own life. Now, I’m the villain and everyone’s on the attack! This dynamic can be so confusing because the backlash does not make sense to a healthy mind. Family members should not be acting like handlers who have to approve of us or our decisions. Bottom line—if family dynamics blow up because you’re trying to do what’s best for you in your own life, you’re not dealing with a healthy system that will allow you to grow. But you have to keep growing anyway. Those boundaries you were trying to set before may just have to be stronger to allow for that growth. Dealing with family systems like these is complex, and standing up for yourself for the first time can feel intimidating. I’m here to help. I was in your shoes just over a decade ago and figured out how to set the boundaries I needed to create peace and healing; break generational cycles for myself and my own family; and rebuild my life entirely from scratch. I now teach other women how to do the same in my book and community on Substack. Subscribe today to start reading and join the conversation. A deep reflection on Prof. Samatar’s insight: “How do people become a nation?” In this lecture, he explains that nations are not born naturally — they are constructed. Drawing on scholars like Gellner and Benedict Anderson, he shows that nationalism invents nations, forming “imagined communities” where people may not share the same language, culture, or history. Prof. Samatar highlights that while Europe and the Americas built nations through new political identities, Africa and Asia formed theirs under colonial domination, where culture became a powerful force for liberation. He reminds us that even the Somali flag was an invention — a symbol created by Muhammad Awale Liban — showing how nationhood itself is crafted.
