This diptych depicts Nakamura Shikan IV as a shirabyōshi dancer on the right and Sawamura Tosshō II as the monk Seikōbō on the left. Their pairing evokes the kabuki dance drama Kyōganoko Musume Dōjōji, in which the dancer Hanako requests entry to the temple to see its newly dedicated bell. Although women are forbidden at the ceremony, the monks agree to admit her on condition that she dance for them. This seemingly charming encounter conceals a darker purpose: Hanako embodies the spirit of Kiyohime, who, after being rejected by the priest Anchin, transformed into a serpent and killed him beneath the temple’s former bell. The dancer’s floral headdress, elaborate costume, and sidelong glance therefore carry an undertone of danger, anticipating the jealousy and supernatural vengeance revealed as the dance unfolds. 『大首役者絵』は、豊原国周が1879年（明治12年）頃に制作した作品である。この二枚続には、右に白拍子を演じる四代目中村芝翫、左に僧のせい高坊を演じる二代目沢村訥升が描かれている。この組み合わせは、歌舞伎舞踊『京鹿子娘道成寺』の物語を思わせる。白拍子の花子は、新しく奉納された鐘を拝むため、道成寺への立ち入りを願い出る。鐘の供養は女人禁制だが、僧たちは舞を舞うことを条件に彼女を中へ入れる。しかし、この一見和やかな出会いには恐ろしい意図が隠されている。花子の正体は、僧の安珍に拒まれた末に蛇へと姿を変え、かつての道成寺の鐘の下に隠れた安珍を焼き殺した清姫の執念を宿す存在なのである。白拍子の花飾りや華麗な衣装、僧に向ける流し目には、その後の舞で明らかになる嫉妬と超自然的な復讐の気配が潜んでいる。 - @silk.echo.jp
