Accidently followed this rule. Got Mazda cx5 2016.5 GT in 2021 for $18800 +tax with 110000 km and recently sold privately with 182000 km for $16500

Never heard it explained like this! In 2020 I bought a 2015 Subaru Impreza sport with 30k miles for $17k. Just passed 100k miles and have never had a problem with it! Although I am VERY tempted to trade it in for a midsize SUV.

What about Toyotas? All the used corollas I’m finding within my budget have a ton of miles. For example, I’m looking at a 2020, $13k, 139k miles. Looks nice and runs great. Is this good?

I recently bought my 2019 civic for 19k that’s 7 years old with 64k miles on it. Did I overpay or is that reasonable?

It’s funny, I feel the same way about getting a vehicle. But my dad always had this rule to not keep a car older than I can afford. I was confused. He said “a used old car is for the rich” meaning that it can also be expensive to maintain the longevity of that car. So I think the 5 for 5 is a good middle ground of getting new-ish car but don’t keep it too long before it start becoming a liability

Why not buy new and keep for 10 years?

I only buy used cars, and this is some of the best advice I've ever heard. Great job, bro.

It’s a great theory but if you’re shopping Camry, Rav4, 4Runner, Lexus, Honda, Acura… maybe even Mazda those cars just don’t lose their value like that. I think it’s more like 10 for 5 with those ultra reliable cars.

Just be aware you may need to get maintenance up to snuff….flushes, brakes, tires, etc

this would be a lot easier if private sellers were as plentiful as they used to be. now the market is full of Facebook flippers

THIS USED TO BE TRUE. But isn't right now bc reliable used cars are in short supply due to Covid and due to the fact people are holding onto their used cars an average of 13 years!
