Older siblings can tend to feel very responsible in their adult relationships. They are the ones who had to set the tone for younger siblings. Older children can also feel like the golden and only child until another child comes along for the ride, which can take away the attention. Younger siblings can sometimes feel incapable or a step behind (as they literally are a step behind developmentally and can’t perform the same tasks as their older siblings). They can also be incredibly praised and loved as the new baby. Middle children can sometimes feel invisible. They can also be quite adaptable and flexible. Keep in mind, that these can be very primal developmental stages and experiences, so there is nothing to be ashamed of. Only children can also be the golden child. They can struggle to make friends as easily as they grow (unless they were socialized with other children or cousins). They can also greatly prioritize relationships as adults because of this. I’ve seen many partnerships form with younger and older siblings because the roles offered in that dynamic are quite familiar and comfortable for them. It can be helpful to take note of the strengths and challenges of sibling relationships so that we have the potential of creating healthier dynamics. Here are some journaling prompts to help you explore this a bit: 1) What were the role/s you felt comfortable in as a child? Do you find yourself playing similar roles in your adult relationship? How so? 2) Do the partners/friends you feel drawn to mirror your sibling relationships in any way? How so? 3) What were the strengths of your sibling relationships? 4) What were the challenges? 5) How might you want to do things differently in your current relationships? //Silvy Khoucasian . .
