Can they not do a financial review without shutting the cards down?

I’d be so mad. They should definitely waive your fees or give you points. That’s bull

I would call to “cancel” so the retention specialist can offer you a credit or points to stay so you can at least get something out of this

Don’t settle for an institution that can do whatever they want whenever they want, hold them accountable. If nobody speaks up they will keep doing the same things. To be paying 3k in fees is crazy if you were paying 0 or less than 100 then it’s fine but they didn’t even give you alternatives nor did they actually care for the inconvenience they caused you. 🚩

It’s a recession indicator. If you look throughout history, every time they do this, it is during a point in time when the economy is in ruin. They did the same thing to me, and I’m just like you and many others have been through it as well recently.

Escalate this as high as you can. There’s 0 documented reason for this. At the MINIMUM they need to waive the annual fee.

Ooof file a UDAAP complaint with Amex and then file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). This complaint will get a top-tier flag and require the bank to provide the CFPB with a full account of their unfair treatment of a consumer. This is outrageous treatment.

I wonder if this was due to the $350MM fine for having an insufficient anti-money laundering program? I'm guessing Amex was made aware of their deficiencies prior to the October 8th judgement and began scrutinizing certain accounts.

I think you should call a customer service rep. Not talk to the finance people who gave the courtesy call.

I would have gotten so much satisfaction from telling them “thanks for letting me know. Now please cancel ALL my cards - I’m moving banks since y’all fkd me around”

it's messed up that they've offered nothing for the unnecessary inconvenience. there is definitely a cost to what they put you through, considering how much you pay, the time it took to deal with the issue, and how this affected your travel.

Please, close your accounts. I’m this petty. If my banks ever hold any of my cards for more than one day and nothing changes I’m leaving them.

It’s apart of the terms and conditions whenever you open a line of credit. The bank or lender holds the right at any point to verify income at any point.

So they just did this for NO reason even though you said that you need them because you were going to be out of town..wow
