@visit.tx.hill.cou: Fort Martin Scott | Fredericksburg, Texas Established in 1848, Fort Martin Scott was among the earliest U.S. Army frontier outposts in Texas. Located near Fredericksburg, the fort served as a military post during a period of westward settlement and conflict on the Texas frontier. The Army’s principal occupation ended in 1853, although the site continued to play a role in the region’s history. It later saw military activity during the Civil War and was eventually repurposed as a family farm. Today, the historic site preserves a combination of original structures, archaeological remains, and reconstructed buildings. In May 1986, archaeologists from the University of Texas at San Antonio investigated the grounds, documenting eight building foundations and recovering hundreds of artifacts that helped illuminate life at the nineteenth-century outpost. Now operated by the Texas Historical Commission, Fort Martin Scott offers visitors an opportunity to explore the history, architecture, and surrounding landscape of the Texas Hill Country.
